Hello Zhi-Ping,
I'm responsible for installing and maintaining the license server for the
version of Matlab installed on the science network. We currently have 10 toolboxes
available associated with this version of Matlab. Since these toolboxes are expensive to
maintain, we do not have more that one or two license seats available concurrently for
each toolbox. So by your logic, a user that loads Matlab should automatically reserve a
seat from each of these toolboxes, which is not what is observed. From what I know, Matlab
will activate (and reserve) a license seat from a toolbox when a function from that
toolbox is called for the first time in a fresh Matlab session (or running a
".m" script). You can verify this activity by ssm loading (in a separate
terminal session) the license server software (after having started a fresh instance of
Matlab):
$> . ssmuse-sh -x /fs/ssm/main/opt/matlab/matlab-lic_R2020a
And then issue the command:
$> lmutil lmstat -a
Please note that these license server binaries (lmgrd and lmstat) only work when logged
into vis.science.gc.ca or hpcr-vis.science.gc.ca (otherwise you get "no such file or
directory " error).
Let me know if you should need more help.
Best,
Sacha ( for the HPCO Helpdesk)

Hi Zhi-Ping,
Thank you for your email. However, it seems not a question I could address as an HPCO
Partner Support Representative. The best way for solving such issue I could think of is to
create an ticket here:
assystNET - (UPDATED) Transfer a software license to another computer
(
dfo-mpo.ca)<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3...
Could you give it a try there?
Best Regards,
Andy (Yuehua)

Hi Bill,
I guess what happened was regardless I use it or not. When I started Matlab, the license
for tooboxes are also started and became occupied by me, even if I don't use it. I
copy this email to tech support to see if they can let the license run only when someone
launch the function that uses specific toolbox.
M_map can be downloaded at
https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/~rich/map.html<https://can01.safelinks.protect....
You can keep downloaded code in a separate folder of your own, without administrators
permission. You just need to add the directory of the m_map to your matlab paths so that
Matlab can find the files in m_map. Mostly the usage of m_map is the same as Matlab
Mapping Toolbox, with minor difference, such as plotm becomes m_plot in m_map; in Mapping
toobox we use lat, lon, whereas in m_map, we use lon, lat. etc.

Thanks Zhi-Ping, I appreciate that you released the Mapping Toolbox. Unfortunately,
quitting MATLAB is the only way to do it.
I've never heard of m_map. Is it installed on the Science Network? Does it work the
same as the Mapping Toolbox?

Hi Bill,
I haven't been using Mapping Toolbox for a long time because of license issue. Instead
I use open source m_map.
Please let me know how I can release the license to you.

Subject: Mapping Toolbox
Hi Zhi-Ping -
I'm a fellow MATLAB user on the science network. I see you have been using the Mapping
Toolbox since 18:32Z. If you are finished now would you please release it? There is only 1
license unfortunately. I don't use it very often, but I would like to work on some new
figures.
Thanks for your consideration!
Bill
