Dear GRIB data users,
As of Monday October 25th 2010, CMC Numerical Weather Prediction data is
available in GRIB format version 2 (GRIB2) on the datamart:
* NAEFS

* GEM regional model
** URL ->

Please also note that the regional model data are now available 4 times
per day (00Z, 06Z, 12Z, 18Z), 06Z and 18Z runs being available only in
GRIB2 format.
You will find more information about the GRIB 2 format in the
Environment Canada documentation on GRIB data at the following address:

The Ensemble model and the wave model data, currently available in GRIB1
format, are not affected by this current migration. Should they be
migrated in the future, a separate message will be sent with the
appropriate information.
== WARNING ==
The data production for the regional and global GEM models in GRIB1
format will be discontinued on Tuesday April 26th 2011 (after Easter).
Thus, in order for users to plan their migration toward the new GRIB2
format, the data for these models will be available for a period of 6
months in both formats: GRIB1 and GRIB2.
We are making this transition in order to benefit from the GRIB2 format
advantages (new variables will be available) and to optimize resource
usage on the datamart (file size will be decreased).
We invite GRIB users to plan their migration toward the GRIB2 format
now. The tools to process this format are available as they are for GRIB1.
A reminder will be sent by email every month until the deadline.

Depuis le lundi 25 octobre 2010, des données de prévision numérique du
temps sont disponibles en format GRIB version 2 (GRIB2) sur le datamart:

Veuillez également prendre note que les données du modèle régional sont
maintenant disponibles 4 fois par jour (00Z, 06Z, 12Z, 18Z), les passes
de 06Z et de 18Z n'étant disponibles que dans le format GRIB2.
Vous trouverez plus de détails sur notre format GRIB2 à l'intérieur de
la documentation d'Environnement Canada sur les données en format GRIB à

Les données du modèle d'ensemble et du modèle de vague présentement
disponibles en format GRIB1 ne sont pas affectées par la présente
migration. Elles pourraient être migrées dans l'avenir et feraient alors
l'objet d'une annonce séparée.
== ATTENTION ==
La production des données du modèle GEM global et régional en format
GRIB1 sera arrêtée, définitivement, le mardi 26 avril 2011 (retour de
Pâques).
Afin de permettre aux utilisateurs de faire leur migration vers le
nouveau format GRIB2, les données de ces modèles seront offertes pendant
les 6 prochains mois dans les 2 formats: GRIB1 et GRIB2.
Nous effectuons cette transition afin de profiter des avantages du
format GRIB2 (nouvelles variables disponibles) et afin d'optimiser
l'utilisation des ressources du datamart (dimension des fichiers diminuée).
Nous invitons les usagers GRIB à planifier leur migration vers le format
GRIB2 dès maintenant. Les outils logiciels pour traiter ce format sont
disponibles au même titre que pour le format GRIB1.
Un rappel sera envoyé par courriel à chaque mois d'ici l'échéance.

(Reminder) Regional GRIB domain update :: (Rappel) Mise à jour du domaine GRIB régional

Dear GRIB users,
The new GEM LAM regional forecasting system was deployed operationally
at CMC on October 20th. The new model grid is implemented differently
than in the previous operational model, having an effect on many
downstream products. Unfortunately, one issue slipped past the
operational implementation date.
Due to the mismatch between the 2 grids, spurious values are present for
about 50 low resolution and 100 high resolution grid points. All the
defective points are located in the extreme northeastern corner on the
Regional products.
This means we need to shrink, ever so slightly, the Datamart GRIB
geographical domains:
1. The Low Resolution Regional domain will change from 135x95 to 132x95
grid points eliminating the easternmost 3 columns.
2. The High Resolution Regional domain will change from 501X399 to
493x399 grid points eliminating the easternmost 8 columns.
3. The High Resolution Global Polar Stereographic domain will also
shrink in order that users may still overlay it with the High Resolution
Regional domain. It will now change from 251x200 to 247x200 grid points
eliminating the easternmost 4 columns.

*These *changes* are already effective for GRIB2 data and *will become
effective on February 15th 2011 for GRIB1 data*.
Documentation will be updated on January 13th 2011. New grid points
latitude/longitude files will also be made available at that time. In
the meantime users can easily make their own by eliminating the
appropriate columns from existing files on the Datamart.

We apologize for any inconveniences but we feel this must be done to
prevent users of the entire domain from inadvertently using erroneous
data in their calculations.
Moreover, we wish to remind you that GRIB1 files will be removed on
April 26th 2011, as already announced on this mailing list. More

Chers usagers GRIB,
Le système de prévision régional GEM à aire limitée (LAM) a été déployé
opérationnellement au CMC le 20 octobre 2010. La grille de ce modèle
étant différente de celles des modèles précédents, un grand nombre de
modifications aux produits en avals ont dû être effectué.
Malheureusement, une de ces modifications n'a pu être faite avant la
date d'implémentation.
La différence entre ces 2 grilles cause des valeurs erronées sur environ
50 points de la grille basse résolution et sur 100 points sur la grille
haute résolution. Ces valeurs erronées se retrouvent dans l'extrême
nord-est de la grille des produits du modèle régional.
Cette implique que nous devons légèrement diminuer le domaine des
données GRIB de la manière suivante;
1- Le domaine des données basse résolution passeront de 135x95 à 132x95
points, éliminant ainsi les 3 colonnes les plus à l'est.
2- Le domaine des données haute résolution passeront de 501X399 à
493x399 points de grille, éliminant ainsi les 8 colonnes les plus à l'est.
3- Le domaine de la grille haute résolution du modèle global en
coordonnées polaires stéréographiques sera également changé afin de
maintenir la correspondance avec le domaine du modèle régional. Il
passera de 251x200 à 247x200 points de grille, éliminant ainsi les 4
colonnes les plus à l'est.
*Les modifications* ont déjà été effectuées pour les données GRIB2 et
*seront apportées aux données GRIB1 le 15 février 2011*.
La documentation sera mise à jour le 13 janvier 2011. Les fichiers pour
les nouvelles latitudes et longitudes seront également disponible à ce
moment. Pour l'instant, les usagers peuvent apporter un correctif en
éliminant les colonnes appropriées sur les fichiers présent sur le datamart.

Nous nous excusons pour les inconvénients que peuvent causer cette
modification, mais nous croyons qu'il important d'apporter cette
correction afin d'éviter aux usagers du domaine entier d'utiliser des
données erronées.
D'autre part, nous tenons à vous rappeler que les données GRIB1 seront
retirées le 26 avril 2011, tel qu'annoncé sur la liste de diffusion. On
