[dd_info] [NOUVEAU] : Version expérimentale du SGPD piloté spectralement (IA) // [NEW] : Experimental version of the spectrally nudged GDPS (AI)

(English follows) Chers usagers des données ouvertes du SMC, C’est avec grand plaisir que je vous annonce l’ajout dans notre offre de données ouvertes, de la version expérimentale du Système global de prévision déterministe (SGPD) piloté spectralement par un modèle basé sur l’intelligence artificielle. Plus précisément, la température et les composantes horizontales du vent aux grandes échelles prévues par le modèle GEM (cœur atmosphérique du SGPD) sont pilotées spectralement par les prévisions d’un modèle météorologique d'ECCC, appelé GEML (Global Environnemental éMuLateur) basé sur l'intelligence artificielle (IA). Ce modèle GEML est fondé sur des données compatibles avec la version ¼°, 13 niveaux du modèle GraphCast<https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adi2336> (Lam et al. 2023) de la compagnie DeepMind. Il a été entrainé et affiné par ECCC, à l'aide des données ERA5 (1979-2016) et des analyses opérationnelles (2016-2021) du CEPMMT ce qui donne à cette version expérimentale du SGPD un caractère unique au niveau international. Grâce à des prévisions à grande échelle plus précises provenant de GEML, cette version expérimentale du SGPD apporte généralement des améliorations significatives par rapport à la version actuellement opérationnelle, surtout pour les jours de prévision 5 à 8. Ainsi, cette nouvelle version entraine un gain de prévisibilité d’environ une demi-journée au 7ème jour de prévision. Nos équipes sont fières de partager ces données expérimentales avec nos usagers. Cordialement, Sandrine ================== Dear MSC open data users, It is with great pleasure that I announce the addition to our open data offering of the experimental version of the Global Deterministic Prediction System (GDPS), which is spectrally nudged using output from an artificial intelligence-based model. More specifically, the large-scale temperature and horizontal wind components predicted by the GEM model (the atmospheric core of the GDPS) are spectrally nudged towards the forecasts of ECCC’s weather model called GEML (Global Environmental eMuLator), based on artificial intelligence (AI). This GEML model is based on data compatible with the ¼°, 13-level version of the GraphCast<https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adi2336> model (Lam et al. 2023) from DeepMind. It was trained and refined by ECCC, using ECMWF’s ERA5 data (1979-2016) and operational analyses (2016-2021), giving this experimental version of the GDPS a unique character at the international level. Thanks to more accurate large-scale forecasts from GEML, this experimental version of the GDPS generally provides significant improvements over the current operational version, especially for forecast days 5 to 8. As a result, this version yields a gain in predictability of about half a day at forecast day 7. Our teams are proud to share this experimental data with our users.
